231 PUBLIC SQUARE

FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE

Commonly known as  “The First Tennessee Bank Building on the Square”, the new Owners plan a major renovation and adaptive re-use of the original 1972 building. A 20’ addition will be constructed into the historic square so that the new façade aligns with the face of the buildings in the North quadrant, thereby repairing the geometry of the historic Square that was broken when this building was originally constructed.  The existing exterior skin will be completely removed and a new building envelope will be constructed that is much more in keeping with the traditional character of the Downtown Historic District.  The interior will be completely gutted.  New stairs, elevators, and building systems will be provided, bringing the building up to Class-A Office space standards.

The renovated building will feature an exclusive restaurant on the first floor.  First Tennessee will maintain a branch bank on the first floor as well, anchoring the northeast corner of the building on Main Street.  The second and third floors will provide Class-A office space.  The rooftop will feature a rooftop bar with covered space located to the interior area of the roof, approximately 20’ from the building edge.  The perimeter rooftop space will allow for outdoor dining overlooking the Square and Main Street.

231 Public Square was presented with two awards at the 2019 Preservation Awards by the Heritage Foundation! The first was for Preservation through Rehabilitation (Commercial), and the second for Craftsmanship. Congratulations to the entire team who contributed to the vision, design, and construction of this landmark project on the Square in Downtown Franklin. Special thanks to Bernie Butler, Brian Schiedemeyer and Anna Ruth Kimbrough for years of dedication, hard work and attention to all of the details that made this project a success!
